ADHD is a neurobehavioral disorder with two key components: impulsivity/hyperactivity and inattention/distractibility. Symptoms range from mild to severe. Some children exhibit one or more symptoms, and others have a combination.
Has your child been diagnosed or do you suspect that your child has learning, disability or behavioral issues? New guidelines make it easier for doctors to diagnose ADHD in children as young as age four, yet many parents, educators and health experts believe the condition is over-diagnosed. While there is ample evidence to support stimulant medication, medicating children is not something to embrace without much thought and research. Stimulant medication may alter brain chemistry and physiology, and comes with some “costs” - side effects and medication-intolerance. Side effects include agitation, sleeplessness, anxiety and tics. In addition, as a child grows, so does their brain. What may have worked at one time, may no longer work.
At Mensah Medical we believe that a natural approach should be seriously considered before agreeing to place your child on a stimulant medication. It is a safer and more ethical way to “normalize” a child with attention challenges. After a careful evaluation of the child’s symptoms, family history, and environment, and results from specialized lab testing, Mensah physicians write a prescription for targeted Advanced Nutrient Therapy. The nutrient protocols are individualized to the child’s unique biochemistry and other factors, such as height and weight, aimed at normalizing his biochemistry. Our vitamin therapy is not a “one size fits all”. Because we recognize that taking capsules may be difficult, our nutrient therapy can be also be taken in liquid or powder form without additives and food colorings. A popular flavor is bubblegum!
Antisocial, Aggressive or Out of Control Behaviors?
If your child or teen has behavioral problems that show up more often, last longer, and are more intense than average, it is important to find out why. Behavioral disorders affect nearly every extended family in the United States. One of the most striking discoveries that William J. Walsh, Ph.D., of Walsh Research Institute found was that more than 70% of people with behavioral and mental disorders have a methylation imbalance.
To explain: The body’s methyl groups turn genes off or on by affecting interactions between DNA and the cell’s protein-making machinery genes. Because the methylation cycle is essential for mental and physical health, basic nutrients necessary for normal function of this cycle are critical. Too much or too little of important methyl groups can cause a methylation imbalance. Being overmethylated or undermethylated combined with pyrrole disorder, elevated toxic metals, nutrient deficiencies and abnormal copper levels is often the “root cause” of individuals with severe behavioral issues.
Targeted Advanced Nutrient Therapy to correct these imbalances generally results in reports of great improvement in children with oppositional–defiant disorder, assaultive or violent behavior, antisocial personality disorder and intermittent explosive disorder.
